The name Lairon is derived from the word "iron", and possibly the word "lair", as its Pokédex entries reference to it being a Pokémon that is very territorial in guarding its lair. It is also very 'lairy' as described in the Hoenn Pokédex.

Lairon is a powerful Pokémon, however it is almost always favoured for its evolution, Aggron, as Aggron has better stats and a much wider moveset. It can be found in Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon Ruby or Pokemon Sapphire in the wild exclusively in Victory Road.

Aron spends a relatively short period of time in the form of Lairon (only 10 levels), as compared to its 32 levels spent as an Aron, and it being an Aggron from Level 42 onwards.

Lairon has extremely high Defense, especially against Normal attacks (due to its unique combination of Steel and Rock types);

however, because of this type combination it receives quadruple (4x) damage from Fighting- or Ground- typed attacks, and with a fairly low Special Defense stat, attack types such as Water prove very effective and can even KO the pokémon in a single hit.

As stated earlier, Lairon is very good considering it is not a final stage. It is banned from NFE and UE battling for these reasons as a choice banded Lairon is far too destructive for most other NFEs and UEs.[citation needed]

It looks very similar to Rhyhorn, following from how Aggron looks like Rhydon.
